Background: For twenty-three years I was a Lee County public school teacher and coach, mostly at the middle school level. Soon after I retired in 2005, I took up triathlon and was certified to coach by USA Triathlon in 2006. Ironman at distances of 70.3 (half Ironman) and then at 140.6 (full Ironman) attracted me late in life. Never-the-less, in April of this year, Mike Reilly, the voice of Ironman, announced my name across the finish line of Ironman Texas. “Susan Kelly, our oldest female competitor, ‘You are an Ironman”’. What he didn’t say was it was my 4th attempt in four years at that distance. In 2018, I finished an Ironman with 50 mins to spare. Anything is possible, folks.
Philosophy: It is my job as a coach to unite your talent with the best practices of sport: its art, the science, and the spirit.
Striving together is the spirit of USMS (Masters swimming). There is strength in numbers. Hard workouts done solo are made easier, “funner”, in a community of swimmers. Masters swimming brings knowledge, experience, safety, event invitations, literature, reviews and discounts on products that interest swimmers. I am proud to be a USMS certified coach. Masters swimmers are challenged and supported as they train.
Certifications: Master’s in Education (M.A.Ed), USA Triathlon Level 2, USMS (Masters), American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 2, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) specializations: CES (corrective exercise), PES (performance specialist), BMS (behavior modification), and finally, Certified Pastoral Minister. It is my honor to take the learning and experience I have and invest it in those that I coach.
